Camper Trailer Basics
New to camper trailers? This section explains the basics of hiring and using an off-road camper trailer. Learn what’s included in the hire, what makes a camper trailer different from a caravan, and how easy they are to set up when you arrive at your campsite.
All our camper trailers are designed to be easy to set up and can generally be done by one person.
During collection we provide a full pre-hire briefing and demonstrate the setup process. Reference sheets are also provided for your trip.
For longer stays, fully enclosed annexes can also be erected.
An off-road camper trailer is designed for travel on sealed roads, dirt roads and tracks where a 4WD vehicle is normally required.
These trailers are built stronger than standard camper trailers and are suitable for exploring remote and rugged parts of Australia.
Everything you need to camp comfortably is included with your camper trailer hire. This typically includes kitchen gear, lighting, bedding options, chairs, table and other essential camping equipment so you can enjoy your trip without needing to bring everything yourself.
Equipment & Features
Discover what equipment and features are included with our camper trailers. This section covers cooking equipment, water storage, power systems, optional fridge hire and other practical features that make camping comfortable and convenient.
All our camper trailers come fitted with a two burner gas cooker and gas cylinder as part of the hire.
For extended trips you may choose to hire an additional gas cylinder.
If you prefer not to bring your own cooking equipment and kitchenware, a fully equipped kitchen box can be hired at a reasonable cost.
A fridge is not included as standard in the camper trailers.
However, refrigeration is available by hiring one of our 40 litre Engel fridge/freezers which can run on both 12V and 240V power.
There is also plenty of room in the trailers if you wish to bring your own portable fridge.
Yes. All our camper trailers include onboard water storage.
Fortescue camper trailer – 70 litre water tank
Eureka camper trailer – 110 litre water tank
There are also storage points for additional water containers, which can be purchased if required.
Power & Off-Grid Camping
Our camper trailers are designed for off-grid camping adventures. This section explains the 12 volt power systems, battery packs, generator options and how you can run lighting, fridges and other camping equipment when travelling away from powered campsites.
We hire AGM sealed 12 volt 105 amp deep cycle battery packs designed for camping use.
The battery pack used with the Fortescue Soft Floor Camper Trailer plugs into your vehicle and charges while you drive. It can power lighting, fridges and charge phones or laptops.
The Eureka Hard Floor Camper includes a battery pack as standard.
These systems are not suitable for high power appliances such as microwaves, air conditioners or hair dryers.
For extended trips away from 240V power we recommend hiring a 2000W inverter generator to recharge the battery and run additional appliances.
Important: cheaper non-inverter generators can damage electronic equipment due to power surges and must not be used.

Setup & Camping Tips
Helpful advice for using your camper trailer while travelling. Learn practical tips about setting up your camper, packing it correctly, travelling with bedding and caring for canvas and equipment during your trip.
Yes.
Our Eureka hard floor camper trailers are waterproof and dustproof, so beds can remain made up during travel.
For the Fortescue soft floor camper we recommend covering bedding with the supplied waterproof sheet so it can remain on the bed for faster setup at your next destination.
If the canvas is wet when packing up, use the supplied waterproof sheet to protect the bedding so it remains dry for your next stop.
However, wet canvas must not remain folded up for more than 2–3 days as mould can develop and damage the material. Damage caused by mould or neglect may incur repair charges.
During transit all our camper trailers are fully lockable, waterproof and dustproof when packed correctly.
A waterproof sheet is provided to cover bedding if the canvas becomes damp when packing up.
Towing & Vehicle Requirements
Learn what vehicle is suitable for towing a camper trailer and what equipment your car needs. This section explains tow bar requirements, trailer plugs, towing capacity and important considerations to ensure your vehicle is legally and safely able to tow one of our camper trailers.
Our camper trailers are fitted with 7-pin round 12V plugs.
Some European vehicles such as Land Rover, Volkswagen, BMW and Volvo may require an adaptor for LED trailer lights to operate correctly.
If required we can supply the appropriate adaptor to ensure legal operation of the trailer lights.
Your vehicle must be fitted with a tow bar and a standard 50mm tow ball (WA standard).
Our Eureka camper trailer is supplied with a Tregg Hitch. When hiring the Eureka camper you must remove the tow ball component prior to collection.
Your vehicle’s ability to tow a camper trailer depends on its maximum braked towing capacity and permitted tow ball weight.
Always refer to your vehicle’s owner manual to ensure you remain within the legal limits and maintain your vehicle insurance coverage.
Approximate tow ball weight:
Fortescue Soft Floor Trailer – approx. 80kg
Eureka Hard Floor Trailer – approx. 150kg
Most 4WDs and many SUVs can safely tow our camper trailers provided they meet the required towing specifications.
Always check your vehicle owner’s manual for the maximum legal braked towing capacity and tow ball weight.
Where You Can Travel
Planning your adventure? Here you’ll find information about where our camper trailers can travel and the types of terrain they are designed for. We explain off-road capability, travel restrictions, and important guidelines for exploring Western Australia safely.
Hills Camper’s off-road trailers can be driven on all recognised tracks. However, areas such as the Simpson Desert and the Canning Stock Route are best navigated by experienced off-road drivers.
No camper trailer or towing vehicle may be driven on beaches below the high tide mark or exposed to salt water.
Tracks that have been closed by local authorities, flooded areas and unmarked water crossings must not be attempted.
Extra caution should always be used when crossing creeks or travelling through remote regions.
Some of our camper trailers are designed for off-road travel. Let us know where you plan to go and we will help match you with the most suitable camper trailer for your trip.
